Flight to Japan

Main Post:

14 hour flight from London and there's a couple of options - landing at 11am (British Airways) or 5pm (JAL) in Tokyo Haneda. Both similar price, any recommendations?

We're going for ~10 days, so "losing" more of the day (landing at 5pm) didn't feel ideal. However, I'm mindful that we'll be very tired and if our hotel check-in isn't open yet that might be frustrating. With that said, I don't know if by the time we would get to our hotel it may already be close to 3-4pm.

My partner can sleep on a plane, but I can't. I don't love flying and I've tried in the past to sleep on long haul flights and it's just not happened (with that said 14 hours is a lot longer than any flight I've taken). My idea was getting there and just doing our best to stay awake till night time and hopefully avoid some jet lag.

Similarly, my plan was to fly back around mid-day from Tokyo so we land in London in the evening and then again, with the idea to get home and sleep to try avoid some jet lag.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

I normally land from the UK at 8am(ish), and stay up the whole day just wandering around — jet lag has yet to beat me! I think it's the excitement of being somewhere else for me, but I do have to quickly freshen up at the airport.

If you feel like you'll much prefer resting when you arrive, and maybe if it's your first ever visit, I would take the later flight.

Had the most awkward experience on my flight from LA to NYC today… how was your day?

Main Post:

Alright, so this literally just happened, and I’m still trying to process the chaos. I was on a flight from Los Angeles to New York, and everything was fine at first. Typical stuff—boarding delays, cramped seats—but nothing too crazy. Then about halfway through, the flight attendants announced an unscheduled stop at O’Hare in Chicago.

Everyone was confused, but they didn’t say much at first. Then, the smell hit. It started subtle, like maybe someone had a bad burrito before the flight, but it got stronger. I noticed people a few rows ahead looking panicked and covering their noses. That’s when I saw it.

An older lady, sitting about two rows in front of me, had clearly had some kind of... accident. And I’m not talking about a little accident. It was liquid and literally streaming down the aisle. People were lifting their bags and feet off the floor as it slowly crept toward them. The flight attendants were trying to keep calm, but you could tell they were dying inside.

When we landed in Chicago, the woman was gently escorted off the plane (along with her seat cushion, I think?). The poor crew had to clean the mess while we all sat there in horrified silence, trying not to gag. I have no idea what happened to the woman afterward, but the whole plane smelled like bleach for the rest of the flight.

So, yeah. That was my day. How about yours?

Well, when anyone asks what’s the craziest shit you’ve experienced on an airplane, you’ll have a great story.

What was your worst experience on a long flight?

Main Post:

I flew internationally last year and there was a baby I kid you not crying for 10+ hours straight Absolutely brutal I had my earplugs in and I took sleeping medicine and that was not strong enough for me I didn’t get a wink of sleep the entire flight. That baby was crying louder than the plane engine! I nearly lost my mind. And it never ever stopped. There was a lot of turbulence and the airlines crew didn’t let the parents walk around to comfort their baby.

I hope I never get such bad luck as the first time again. I don’t have fancy headphones because I spent my money traveling 😆

It was 10+ years ago when I was 20. I had an overnight flight and chatted briefly with the guy next to me before I fell asleep. When I woke up, he had his hand on my thigh. He had a blanket over him but was definitely rubbing himself with his other hand. The plane was dark, and most people were asleep. He didn't notice I woke up, so I closed my eyes and made a movement to turn my legs to the other side. He shot his hand away. I pretended to sleep another hour (but I didn't obviously). He luckily didn't touch me again, but when I "woke" up later (when I heard other people awake), he asked me if I was asleep the whole time. I said "yea I really knocked out." I said I needed to go to the bathroom, meaning I needed him to get up. He asked me if I wanted him to come with me. I laughed and acted like I didn't know what he was talking about. Gross and uncomfortable and couldn't wait to get off that plane. I stopped chatting with plane neighbors after that

Best site for buying plane tickets?

Main Post:

I will be traveling (on a plane) for the first time alone next year. (In the past I've always gone with a group of people and someone else purchased the tickets for me.) Which travel site is the simplest/easiest to buy plane tickets online?

I was looking at kayak, but please let me know if you have any specific recommendations. I have two diff credit cards but I have never purchased plane tickets online before. ( I would just be purchasing airfare for one person, round-trip and nonstop if possible. I am most focused on finding the best deal as well as reliability/security of the website and something that's easy to use). Any advice/recommendations are greatly appreciated. Thank you.
